Ultimate Guide to Graduate School Scholarships in Finance

Financial Aid For Post-Graduate Finance Studies

Are you finishing up your bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or economics? Maybe you’ve been in the workforce for a while, and want to invest in your skills with advanced education. No matter the reason, a masters or postgraduate degree in finance can be a worthwhile investment. Paying for it, however, is a mixed bag. Read on to learn the good and not-so-good news about navigating financial aid for your master’s degree in a finance field—plus a state-by-state list of financial aid options for finance masters.

The good news

It’s not your first rodeo. You have a leg up on undergrads because you’ve likely applied for financial aid before, so you may find the process easier this time. The basic motions of the process are about the same: get ready to write essays, collect letters of recommendation and meet application deadlines.

You’re considered an adult on the FAFSA. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) takes your parents’ income and financial information into account when you’re an undergrad. As a postgraduate, you’ll likely be considered independent. That means less information to collect and submit, and a possible change in your financial status. You may be eligible for more federal financial aid than you were as an undergraduate.

You have an existing network. After four years of school, you’ve likely developed relationships with faculty, staff and grad students who can move obstacles and find opportunities for you. You may have an easier time collecting letters of recommendation, finding work-study opportunities or even accessing aid like tuition waivers.

Accounting majors are a special case. If you’re planning to sit for the CPA exam, you may benefit from special “fifth year” scholarships for future CPAs.

The not-so-good news

Fewer options overall. There are simply not as many scholarships and grants for master’s programs. That’s no reason to give up looking, but aim to have realistic expectations. With fewer applications to submit, you can focus on making each one flawless.

Federal loans are unsubsidized and interest rates are higher. You no longer have the option for subsidized loans, so you start accruing interest right away. And interest rates on postgraduate loans are generally higher than loans for undergraduates. Borrowing limits are higher, too—so you’ll want to plan carefully when taking out loans.

Fewer need-based options. For example, Federal Pell Grants are only available for teachers. As a finance major, you will find fewer grants based on financial need. They do exist, but don’t expect the same options you had as an undergrad.

Top Scholarships for a Master of Science in Finance/Financial Services

The following is a comprehensive list of scholarships available for finance majors working on their graduate or postgraduate degree. Keep in mind, there are also special scholarships based on race, ethnicity, disability status, religious affiliation, military affiliation or veteran status, and more. If you belong to a minority group, look into additional financial aid that may be available to you.

Read on to find your state and the scholarship options available.
