Ultimate Guide to Scholarships for Finance

So, you have decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in finance. Congratulations! Whether you are fresh out of high school or coming back to college after the workforce, you’re one step closer to a rewarding and versatile career in fields like finance, accounting, economics or business.

You know college does not come cheap. In the U.S., the average tuition cost for a four-year public educational institution is more than $20,000 per year. For private institutions, it is more than $40,000 per year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. So, your first financial puzzle might be how to pay for your degree. This can be a murky and intimidating space in the education process, but with a little research and planning, you can secure multiple streams of aid and reduce not only your out-of-pocket expenses but also your debt after graduation.

To help you get started, we’ve compiled a master resource of scholarships and grants—listed by state—for finance, accounting, business and economic majors from across the country. We’ve broken down benefits, application deadlines, and contact information for scholarships and grants from more than 50 organizations.

Financial Aid Explained: Grants, Scholarships & Work-Study

Before diving into the resources, let us look at the different financial aid options and models available to you.

Merit-based Financial Aid: These are scholarships, grants and subsidized loans awarded to exceptional students, students studying a certain field (such as finance), students with exceptional athletic (or musical, or artistic) ability and students who submit stellar applications. Standards are extremely high for these awards, and students with a consistent A-average will be at an advantage. The most substantial merit-based scholarships often come from educational institutions themselves. They may be a one-time check, a series of payments or simply tuition waivers.

Need-based Financial Aid: These are scholarships, grants and subsidized loans intended to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds. There may be income caps or other financial requirements. For example, the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, assesses a student’s and family’s financial situation and awards aid accordingly and typically is the first step of any financial-aid qualification. Scholarships and grants for minority groups may also be considered need-based aid, though they usually have merit-based requirements as well.

Scholarships: Most scholarships are merit-based. They come from universities and colleges themselves, government bodies and private organizations, awarding free or reduced tuition, books, housing, etc. Exceptional performers—in academics, sports, music and art—are most likely to receive these financial awards, which can be as substantial as a full four-year ride. Competition is fierce.

Grants: This form of financial aid is usually need-based. The Pell Grant, an income-qualifying grant, is an example. They are often awarded by private or nonprofit organizations and in smaller amounts than scholarships. If you’re a member of a minority group—for example, racial or ethnic minority status, disability status, LGBTQ, veteran/military status—investigate grants that may apply to you. You will likely want to apply to several grants to boost your chances of receiving one—or more. Competition for these awards is also tight, and you’ll need to bring your A-game.

Work Study: This type of federal financial aid has a relatively high time investment but can pay off in professional experience. You essentially work for the college or university part-time in exchange for free or reduced tuition, housing or books. There are a wide variety of work-study positions to choose from: in residence halls, fitness centers, libraries, bookstores, research labs or even off-campus. The FAFSA also assesses your eligibility for this kind of financial aid.

Student Loans: You likely understand these already. They are a form of financial aid that you must pay back over time. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the average student borrower in the U.S. owes $36,520—but many owe much more. Loans can come from the federal government, state institutions or private organizations.

There are four types of Federal Direct Loans:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans: These are need-based loans for undergraduate students.
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans: These are loans that do have eligibility requirements, but eligibility is not based on financial need. They’re given to undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
  • Direct PLUS Loans: These are loans for graduate or professional students—and parents of dependent undergraduate students—to fill the gap between education expenses and other financial aid. While it’s not based on financial need, there is a credit check. You may need to meet additional requirements if you have a poor credit history.
  • Direct Consolidation Loans: These combine all federal student loans into a single loan with a single servicer.

To learn which loans are available in your state, contact the department of education, the higher education agency or other agency for adult education. Find a list of state contacts here.

What do I need to Qualify for Scholarships and Grants?

It is no easy feat to win a scholarship or grant. Here is a look at the types of requirements you’ll have to meet to be considered—and win—this valuable financial aid for finance majors.

GPA: Working toward college begins in your freshman year of high school. That is because a high GPA is a near-universal qualification for financial aid. The higher your GPA, the more doors will open to you. So, if you’ve been hitting the books hard for four years and your grades tell that story, you will have an easier time securing aid that you don’t have to pay back—or work for. A cumulative GPA of 3.5 is good, and a 4.0 is great.

Residency Requirements: Many scholarships and grants are location-based. They are intended to help residents of a certain state, county or municipality. So, to qualify, you’ll need to prove you’re a resident. Or, if you are really invested, move to establish residency.

Timing: Start applying earlier than you would think. Some application deadlines fall as early as January. If you are applying for multiple scholarships and grants, sort them by deadline to make the best use of your time.

Number of Applications: This is the part of the process where you have the most control. The only restriction on the number of applications is the time it takes to apply. As you’ll see in the list that follows, most major-specific grants award far less money than a full-ride scholarship does, so you will want to apply to as many as possible. You have nothing to lose.

Work-Study Programs

Check to see if your school of choice participates in the Federal Work-Study program. This program emphasizes jobs in civic or community engagement or jobs in a student’s chosen field of study. Some schools have agreements with private businesses or institutions to promote work in a student’s chosen field.

In these jobs, you will earn the current federal minimum wage at the very least. But you could earn more based on the work you do. The total award also depends on factors like when you apply, your financial circumstances and the funding allocated to your school.

If you are interested in this kind of financial aid, apply as soon as possible. If you have filled out the FAFSA, you’ve already applied for the Federal Work Study program.
