In the 2011 Survey of Trends in the Financial Planning Industry, in which industry tends were extrapolated from the responses of 1,200 experienced financial planners, it was found that educational background and continuing education were ranked among the most significant factors contributing to the continued success of a financial planning business. This agrees with the results of a joint survey conducted by the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards and the International Association for Financial Planners, which showed that clients feel that knowledge and education is one of the most important factors to consider when retaining a trusted financial planner.

The financial planning industry's most academically ambitious, give much of the credit for their continued success to the fact that they've earned doctorate degrees. These programs provide the most comprehensive education possible while also instilling in clients a unique level of trust and confidence that comes from entrusting their assets with an industry professional dedicated and disciplined enough to earn a PhD.
